Mendenhall Glacier

After whale watching we headed over to see Mendenhall Glacier.  I think if I had seen this one before Sawyer Glacier I may have enjoyed it more.  Not to mention our Whale Watching ran a little late so we didn't have enough time to hike to Nugget Falls.

The waterfall you see in the photo below is Nugget Falls.

Here is a little perspective...if you zoom in you can see people at the base of the falls.

The striations in the rock show where the glacier was.  As a glacier advances it drags rocks and boulders along with it which leaves these marks in the rock and can over thousands of years carve away the land creating a new landscape.  Mendenhall Glacier used to cover a much greater area and like all the glaciers it is retreating.

This is a photo of ice from the glacier at the visitors center. We wondered whose job it was to harvest the ice everyday.  It was a big chunk!
