What do Homeschoolers Do?

I'm getting really close to writing a dissertation on Homeschooling. While it has become much more widely accepted than even five years ago there are still many people who hold on to ridiculous stereotypes about homeschoolers....Socialization is the worst culprit.

Hmmm let’s compare. At public school my child spent all day every day in the same classroom with the same homogenous group of 20 kids all living within 2 miles of our house and all being of roughly the same background. The kids were told to be quiet and not talk to each other about 95% of the time. There was one teacher, maybe an assistant.

Now Homeschooling; My kids belong to 3 different homeschool organizations. They take classes on an average week from 9 or more different teachers. They interact with dozens of kids (all ages from infant to High school) and adults from different backgrounds, cultures, religious and social beliefs. They are encouraged to talk, to express their opinions, to embrace and celebrate the difference and similarities in all people.

Sometimes people say “I can spot a homeschooler because they act weird” well if it’s because they don’t act like the socially stunted public school kids I totally understand.

Now back to the frivolity of my photos. "what do homeschooler do"

We sit in traffic.

Take science classes with all ages

wear silly hats to class on silly hat day

disect owl pellets

and love every minute of it

monkey around in PE class

play board games at a party while making new friends
We do "book" work.

And sometimes we play hookey at Chuck E Cheese...Just kidding....maybe
